Cast Iron Guttering Repairs and Installation: A Transformation in Turnchapel, Plymouth

There’s something special about working on older properties, especially when they carry with them a character and craftsmanship from years gone by. Recently, I had the privilege of embarking on a unique project involving cast iron guttering repairs and a brand-new installation for a historic property in Turnchapel, Plymouth. Not only was it an exciting challenge, but it was also a wonderful collaboration with a fellow BNI member, Luc Barbier.

A Nod to History with New Guttering

For those who may not know, cast iron gutter systems were once the hallmark of historic architecture. They held storied tales of the past while efficiently managing rainwater. Unfortunately, time can take its toll, and with that often comes the need for repairs or even complete replacements.

In our recent project, we repaired some old cast iron guttering and downpipes using GRP flexi resin. This innovative material is incredibly resilient and flexible, offering a lasting solution while preserving the aesthetics of the older structures. The outcome was fantastic! You can really see the finesse that comes with maintaining historical character.

Now, we’ve shifted gears to work on Luc's property—another fascinating piece of history in Turnchapel. This incredible old building needs a new ogee cast iron gutter system, and we’re thrilled to fit it in a manner that complements the property’s age and design.

Why do we often choose ogee over other styles? The ogee shape is not only aesthetically appealing; it functions perfectly, allowing more water to flow and diverting it efficiently from the roof. This is crucial to preserving the structural integrity of older buildings which, without proper drainage, can face serious deterioration over time.
